Chapter 32

The weekend in New York couldn’t come and go quickly enough. Hudson wanted so badly to be done with this project, if it may be so termed. This experiment, is what it was. This experiment that failed catastrophically. Not in every aspect, but in enough of them.

The equipment was delivered on schedule, and set up on time to perform his first operation on Saturday afternoon, with patient Clyde Winthrop. By late in the evening he had finished Elizabeth Saunders. These procedures were different from all previous ones in that the families were present to observe. Hudson thought he owed them that much. No more secrecy. He stated his credentials as the state’s top neurosurgeon before expounding every detail of his actions as he performed them. These families were far more understanding than Hudson would have guessed. His transparency to them as well as refunding a percentage of the bill was ostensibly the reason for this understanding; not to mention they were hugely impressed with how effectual the procedure had been. No quack could have pulled that off. “If it wasn’t for the damned nightmares, life would be perfect,” Daniel Saunders had said. “I mean, they’re something else. It sounds like someone’s torturing Elizabeth. It was when she started hallucinating the same subject matter of her dreams that we decided enough was enough.”

The Winthrop’s and Saunders’ wanted nothing more than their children to return to normal.

Hudson instilled in the Saunders some degree of hope, something positive to cling to in the wake of the procedure’s reversal. “There’s a chance,” Hudson had told the Saunders’, “slim as it might be, that Elizabeth won’t regress completely. She might be marginally more intelligent than she was originally.” Hudson had absolutely nothing to base that on but a hunch.

For the Winthrop’s, their child’s future was bleaker than Elizabeth’s. Unlike Elizabeth, Clyde had Child Disintegrative Disorder. Clyde was likely to succumb to the defect following the removal of the network of infrastructure. But who knew? Time would tell.

That night Hudson closed the door on the medical office for the final time. He sat in the office chair and wept. What a dismal failure he had been in all this. With the exception of Emily.

The next morning he phoned the commercial real estate agent and quit the lease on the office, agreed to pay the fee for breaking it prematurely. He made a few phone calls before finding a non-profit children’s hospital in Charleston that was interested in buying his medical equipment for roughly forty-percent of its original value. It was a good deal on both ends: Hudson wanted rid of the stuff, and the hospital was willing to have a truck come pick the it up. By Tuesday the office was empty.

Friday night the Gammond’s were invited to the Jacoby’s for dinner. It had been a while since they got together, several weeks or maybe even a month; too long, considering the close nature of their friendship. Brie was the recipient of the invitation, and given it over the phone by Andrea.
